- Arrange to have all mail and bills forwarded to your new address.
- Have your gas, water, and electric meters read on the day you move out.
- If you have an oil furnace, arrange to have your oil tank read and filled
before your sale closes. Give the receipt to your lawyer if you have to.
- Watch for house equipment leases like alarm systems! If leased, make sure
that the leases are transferred at closing.
- Send out any notices of your new address well before your deal closes
- Cancel or readdress any deliveries or services you get on a regular basis
like your newspaper subscription, dry cleaning, magazines, and diaper
services.
- Change the address on your driver's license(s) effective the day of the
move.
- Deciding what to move and what not to move. Plan a garage sale if you want
to have one well in advance.
- Pack your own valuables, jewelry, important papers (birth certificates,
deeds, documents) to take with you. Don't leave this to the movers!
- Leave forwarding labels at your old home so the new owners can easily
forward mail missed by the post office or which comes after your forward
expires.
- Contact the major utility companies and make sure that the services are
disconnected and transferred to your new home at or before closing.

- Make a list of important numbers you will have to call as soon as you move
in to your new home.

a letter of reference to your new bank. This will help you establish
your credit in your new town/country.
- Arrange for your bank to transfer any necessary finances like bank
accounts and securities. This can take some time so arrange it well
in advance to occur on a certain day.
- Keep your old account open for some time after closing to make sure
that you have access to an account if necessary.
- If you are moving to another town arrange for the transfer of your
personal information including your medical, dental, prescription and
optical records.
- Cancel your house insurance effective the closing date of your transaction.
Make sure that your insurer will cover you in case your deal is delayed
for any reason.
- Leave your travel itinerary with a friend in case of an emergency.
- Keep your invoices and receipts in case your move is tax deductible.
